A Hole in Vienna

A Hole in Vienna

Outside the Emperor’s palace
between horse-buggy and hybrid,
I saw a gash in the earth.
Out steamed his story,
a hundred times as old
as I.

To melt into courtyard fountains
in the Viennese sun.

Four empires
more rulers than that,
each omnipotence dying,
or falling in turn.

Today in a pit, I saw
stones unturned for 2000
years, since when the wounds
in a certain pair of Hebrew hands
still flowed.

Father, their dreams were there in
the wishing-well litter, and the coin-covered
walls, and the cigarette ash and the horse shit.

I couldn’t hold them.
